Did Dick Jones Break the Law? Twice?

Below is an illuminating video clip of our old nemesis City Councilman Dick Jones defending redevelopment expansion in Fullerton.

Dick’s suggestion that blight exists because foreclosed houses are close to “those blighted areas”, makes absolutely no sense, and, in fact directly contradicts the specific legal findings he had to make to support Redevelopment expansion; but then again look who’s talking.

The other important question Dick’s little speech raises is whether or not he discussed this issue with Pam Keller prior to the meeting. Listen to when Dick he says “when this thing passes, I’m going to make a motion to have our attorney and our staff work with the County to….”, it was obvious he already knew it was going to pass. But how could he have known unless of course Dick had already gone over this with Keller, the ultimate third vote? This is not a Brown Act violation, but it sure would be if he had previously discussed this issue with either Don Bankhead or Sharon Quirk, and it’s pretty hard to believe otherwise. These guys habitually play fast and loose with the Brown Act prohibition against “serial meetings” so it’s not inconceivable.

It’s not a far stretch, you decide!

  1. Two things come to mind:

    1) Stay with me here. Anyone think some sideburns and this dude looks like a dead ringer for Captain Kangaroo? As his hair gets fluffier and rounder you have to give this one to me.

    2) This guy is so stupid he does not understand that if you can articulate how the new district can succeed without the money he wants to give to the county, by definition, it does not meet the blight standard.

Dicky, the whole point of redevelopment is that ALL the funds are necessary for the district to pull out of the blighted situation. If the district does not need ALL of the funds (which according to you is the case here), how do you think your attorney is going to explain the need in the first place.

Dr. Dick, you are a god send to the opposition in this case and you have no idea you are helping ruin the chances for expansion more than helping it. Since you are a doctor, imagine letting the blood of a sick patient thinking you are helping him get well by drasining the toxins. Meanwhile you are actually killing your patient.

If Norby paid you to get on the dias and say a few special tid bits that would ultimately screw up the redevelopment agencie’s chances for success he couldn’t ask for a better job. I hope you are proud when the county wins its case by quoting you.

    1. Hollis, you have a great memory and sense of humor, Captain Kangaroo is a perfect match with Dick, an idea for a new post. Thanks!

  2. Three quarters of what he said was just incomprehensible. This is getting more and more embarrassing. And Bankhead is blanking out, too.

Somebody kindly person really needs to take these two dinosaurs to the side and let them know it’s time to go.

  3. What was that last thing he said? He didn’t want to send the money to Tanganyiki-mumble?

Please, can’t someone do an intervention and get this guy out of there?

  4. Do you all feel the same as I do? This guy thinks he’s saying something important and everyone in the room is biting through their lip to stop from laughing their asses off. Rarely do we ever run across a guy that has so little clue that the rest of us are laughing at him.

The republican party cant get focussed on cutting loose of these old senile kooks and finding some young leadership. Anyone that voted for this lunatic owes the Friends here an apology.

    1. Ouch. Now that just hurt. But fair.

Don’t forget the Observer crowd and the country club Republican crew both supported Ackerman big time when he ran against Norby for Assembly in 1995.

  5. Bob Ward & Bob Fisler did back Dick, it’s true, but some Fullerton Dems still liked Norby because he’d stuck up for Molly when the Ack/Buck/LQ majority had screwed her out of the mayorship.

’95 was a long time ago, now. Sharon/Dick are now the leading apologists for Bankhead/Jones–ironic, since Ack used to blast Ralph Kennedy as being a radical.
