Doug Chaffee Announces Candidacy For City Council

Third time's the charm?

Aha! Our old acquaintance Doug Chaffee has announced he is running again for Fullerton City Council. He must feel that the number of vacancies this fall will improve his chances. His two prior forays into elective politics were expensive and disastrous.

Anyhoo, here’s the announcement:

CHAFFEE WILL SEEK SEAT ON FULLERTON CITY COUNCIL

Fullerton, CA, June 22, 2010.  Doug Chaffee will file papers with the Fullerton City Clerk indicating that he will seek a seat on the city council. The general election is scheduled for November 2, 2010. In announcing his candidacy, Chaffee said that he is extremely concerned about the city’s financial situation, which has resulted in diminished city services.

“My campaign will emphasize sustainable financing for the city and restoring a sense of inclusiveness, openness and civility among the people who work, live, and serve our city. There are many challenges facing Fullerton. I want to hear from the community – residents, homeowners and businesses. I’m a good listener and welcome everyone’s ideas. Working together, we can create common sense solutions to the economic and social challenges that face Fullerton.”

A business attorney who has practiced law in downtown Fullerton for more than 40 years, Chaffee is a graduate of Fullerton Union High School, University of Redlands (BA Economics), and Northwestern University School of Law. He lives in Fullerton with his wife, Paulette, and sons Marshall and Adam.

Chaffee is vice chair of the Fullerton Planning Commission and past president of Fullerton United Way and Sunrise Rotary Club. He serves on the board of directors, North Orange County YMCA and the Advisory Board of Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Service. He is a member of Friends of Jazz and the Sierra Club.

He can be reached at (714) 726-0521 or chaffeemar@earthlink.net.

We received this notice in an e-mail from a Chaffee volunteer who hopes FFFF will be fair to Mr. Chaffee.

Well, hell, we’re always fair.

Anyway, about Chaffee: he is one of those unrepentant liberals who almost always seems to believe government knows best. On the other hand his position on the City’s doling out entitlements on massive projects with gleeful abandon has been better than others.

In the past some of us meanies have singled out Chaffee as the recipient of our acerbic affections. This time? Who knows? We’ll have to see how good, or bad, the ultimate crop of candidates is.

  1. Let’s see what level of detail he is willing to provide in his plans for the sustainable city financing he says he wants in his press release.

  2. I’ll only vote for him if I see him standing in front of the bulldozers, employed by fullerton’s RDA ,demanding “stop this insanity.”

  3. “His two prior forays into elective politics were expensive and disastrous.”

But he got more votes than Ralph Baker!

  4. The grammar is pretty bad and the thing is littered with cliches and oddities, such as: our “social challenges.” I wonder what those challenges are supposed to be.

In reality we have “intelligence and courage challenges” on the CIty Council. Once Jones and Bankhead are gone those are bound to go way up.

This answer — so full of nice-sounding filler words — reminds me of my favorite interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj3iNxZ8Dww

  6. I’m Bill Chaffee Doug’s brother. I was born at Fullerton Hospital, 201 E Amerage, Fullerton CA on Sa5turday February 24, 1951 at 3:20 AM. I asked Doug if it was news to him that I had been diagnosed as having cerebral palsy. he responded “I don’t know what it is.” In 2006 I pulled papers to run for city council, however I didn’t actually file papers (I didn’t know that Doug was planning to run again) however I wish that I hadn’t backed down. I was planning to run as a handicap advocate. However I do have opinions on other issues (Google Bill Chaffee-nuclear energy). Whose energy policy makes more sense, mine or Doug’s?

My mother died on March 19, 2011. I have not allowed to see my mothers wilI even though I requested it several times (he is executor of my mom’s estate. I have come to regard Doug as the brother from hell. Doug does not recognize a difference between physical dependence and addiction with regard to pain medication. I voted for him twice but not the third time.

    1. Bill, way too bad Doug wont share your mothers will with you 🙁

Maybe you should run for City Council in 2012. Doug has run three times and lost all three. And you don’t have the enemies Doug has, but you have the Chaffee name, just a thought….

    2. Bill, are you okay? I heard through the grapevine that Doug threw you out of your own house. Is that true?

Doug, would you care to elaborate on your brothers claims?

  8. Thank you for the support Curious. What I need now is money to live on, and a good attorney. The C. P. most likely resulted from a birth injury. After my late mom mentioned that she had no recollection of me being born, I asked her if she remembered my brothers and and my sister being born and she said that she did. I,M the third of five counting my late brother Paul (April 15, 1945-June 30, 2007) who died of prostate cancer. It used to be common for women in labor to be given a combination of scopolamine and morphine(Google scopolamine childbirth). Mon also stated that she noticed forceps marks on the front and back of my head(not my temples). I wonder if a lot of people born in the mid 20th century have birth injuries because of delivery room practices at the time. I may not have internet access much longer for economic reasons.

    1. Bill, I’d like to start a collection to keep your internet service alive and I’ll put the first $50.00 in. What address would you like me to send my check to?

It’s really a shame what you are going through!

  9. Of my siblings, my late brother Paul was the easiest to communicate with. He had a PHD. in psychology, however he lived in Hingham Mass. He met his wife there when he was in college. I can’t help wondering if my mom went downhill faster after he died.

  10. I currently owe time-warner $185.00 I could reduce costs by dropping cable tv and just keeping internet services.

  11. My brothers have heen threating me with 5150 , however I see it as an attempt to deprive me of my first ammendment rights.
