Housing the Homeless
Post hoc, ergo propter hoc is a fallacy in logic. It means that just because B follows A, it doesn’t necessarily mean that A caused B.
With this caveat in place, Friends, please consider two events in their close chronological order:
- In November of 2015 the people of Fullerton presented Ron Thomas with a $4.9 million settlement for the death of his son, Kelly – killed by members of our police department.
- In January of 2016 Ron Thomas bought a house in Cypress for $1.3 million, with no loan indicated.
Does the the first event have any causal relationship with the second? Well, not necessarily, right?
Of course, this topic is only a matter of interest because in 2011 in an effort, one supposes, to curry favor with the media and the public, Mr. Thomas promised to give all of any proceeds from a lawsuit against the people of Fullerton to “homeless programs.” Was it true? Is it true? Will it ever be true? Do you care?
Now on july 5th 2011 where was everyone living … ?? From July 5h 2011 please take us back in time to July 4th , july 3rd , july 2nd 2011, 2010 , 2009 .. ok you get my point … everyone’s focused on one day July 5th 20011 forward …
Keith
I doubt the proceeds from the sale of his former property amounted to $1.2M. But even so, any slightly smart person only buys a $1.2 CASH if he has plenty of reserves .
I don’t think Cypress is going to let him run a homeless shelter there.
Wow!!! $1,200,000 home and no mortgage!
Hard to see the house with that monster truck in front of it. 3,600 square feet is a lot so I’ll just assume it’s nice.
Why didn’t he keep his promise?
Please read this … ron thomas admits he worked the jails and quit … in every interview he claims he is a retired sheriff’s deputie … a quiter is never retired. http://www.orangecoast.com/features/lost-boy/
He was fired for beating his wife. Never was a deputy, just a jailer. That’s why he took the deal because this and other lies would have come out in the civil trial.
Ron wasted no time in spending the settlement money …
At least he could spend Fullerton’s taxpayer’s money in Fullerton . He ain’t Fullerton lover
“You have no idea what I’ve done with the money.”
Yes, we do.
Don’t forget, he promised to never settle with the city so we could learn the truth about Kelly in court.
Yeah, but I don’t think anybody believed that whopper.
What’s in the big box?
Big, expensive house and big, expensive truck; Ron Thomas has a theme going on here; the bigger the better. To me, the bigger the more vulgar since this new found wealth arose from his son’s blood
above post from van
WOW! Maybe FFFF can get its $1200 back now.
I really can’t believe the harsh judgment coming from everyone! Have any one of you lost a “child” in this horrible manner? Have any one of you raised a special needs child? If you answered “no” to one of these, then you have no right to be critical. No doubt Mr. Thomas had a passion for change in the early years. He may have made comments out of his deep grief. Who knows how much he will contribute to the homeless. It’s his money! I say good for him for purchasing a new home. It will be a place where he can escape some of the horrible memories from the former home. Even if he contributed 20% to help the homeless, he’d be contributing about $1,000,000. Can any of us say that we’ve been so generous?
“He may have made comments out of his deep grief. ”
If he’s not going to follow through with his promises, then he should just admit it
I bet that trailer full of desert toys really helps assuage his pain.
“He may have made comments out of his deep grief.”
He was so grief-stricken that he SOLD the picture of Kelly that went viral. He promised to give all award money to “homeless programs” and he often said he would never settle so that the truth would come out in a trial.
AND ALL OF THIS HAPPENED AFTER KELLY WAS ALREADY DEAD. He was using the media and “Kelly’s Army” to get more $ out of us. It worked and some of us resent being played.
He said his son was dead to him years before the incident.
Agreed
It was said that Kelly Thomas was searching for cigarette butts in the sidebar parking lot on the night of July 5th 2011 … i wonder why ?? His family received in his behalf his monthly reoccurring government ssi check on july 1st 2011 and his monthly reoccurring government check ssdi on july 3rd 2011 all social security payments trusted in the hands of the family to issue to kelly … now if he was contacted on july 5th 2011 and beaten to almost death by 6 Fullerton cops .. how much money was in Kelly’s pocket … did the family give Kelly his money days prior to the beating ?? Did they pay Kellys rent ?? … what exactly did they do with his money ??
Betsy,
You might be right. Nothing mourns the loss of a loved one like a big spending spree!!!
Psychology 101. Healing the deep sorrows of the soul with majestic real estate
I’m so appalled by the lack of courage by all the above comments. It’s not brave to be sarcastic and cutting while you hide your identity. I’m sorry, but I thought this sight was to hold the Fullerton politics in balance, not to bash a man who lost his son in a most devastating manner. Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. You won’t see me comment again as I’m leaving this toxic sight.
“You won’t see me comment again as I’m leaving this toxic sight.”
I believe the word you wanted was “site,” although to you this site may present a toxic sight.
Don’t forget to take your bunny suit with you.
LOL
Betsy, Ron “lost his son” BEFORE he promised to give ALL of any settlement/award to the homeless.
So what’s the connection?
While I agree that some tactics for discussion are better than others, I think it’s still very important to bring these issues to light and a bit under fire. Yes, Ron lost a son in a horrific manner and maybe he truly is still grieving in his own way. I think it can be safely argued that a lot of these comments are also made out of frustration and grief. The Fullerton community came out in strength to hold the police accountable and has been largely disappointed. Justice turned into a settlement, which I think is the next logical step, but if justice has to take the form of money it’s just another disappointing blow to not see that money go to anything to help the homeless population in Fullerton. I know Ron gives out a little here and a little there “anonymously”, but maybe he doesn’t realize how terrible all of this looks? If nothing else maybe he can become more self aware of his actions, how he’s perceived, and is perhaps a bit forced to be kept to his word.
(I also don’t need to know anything about a person to know that if they are driving a truck like that then they are already a bit of a douche. We live in Southern California, kids. You need some monster like that for the ‘terrain’?)
You are wrong. It’s all politics we are talking about. Ron constantly trying to make the public believe is not taxpayers’ money. …His unfulfilled promise to use all funds for the homeless cause. Kelly’s case opening the door for Hughes to become the chief pseudo reformer with cosmetic changes and benefiting from his pals at the DAs. I just would like to confirm someone’s comment to the effect that Ron and Hughes go camping together
Exactly. Ron Thomas was (and is) always posing and in the end his public persona was nothing more than an attempt to shake our money tree as hard as he could.
He actually got up at a council meeting once to make the point that the insurance company would pay his claim (not the taxpayers) – that the deductible was already paid on his wife’s claim! But they were separate claims and each had a separate deductible which I believe is $2,000,000 per claim. H -but he got away with it because none of our council creatures would correct him in public.
As an aside I would point out that he called off the protests not long before Danny was chosen by Felz to be Acting Chief. Another coincidence?
Spot on.
Sort of hung the rest of the protester’s out to dry who were still out front of the Fullerton PD headquarters protesting which nearly evolved into a riot…until Chief Hughes tore up the ticket that the then President of the Fullerton Police Officers Association, Barry Coffman had issued to one of the protesters…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEIbMZxqJw8
…same jerk off that the people of Fullerton spend over $200,000 annually of their hard earned money on!
http://transparentcalifornia.com/salaries/search/?a=fullerton&q=coffman&y=2015
Yeah, but FL it was HUGHES who orchestrated the honking tickets. We saw him watching with binoculars.
Oldest trick in the book: bad cop, good cop.
I think you meant to say “excessive horning” tickets.
Absolutely!
Hughes also lied straight up about doing so.
Hughes is a bold faced and bald headed liar.
He’ll get his comeuppance.
Guaranteed.
“He’ll get his comeuppance.”
I’m afraid I’m going to have to disagree with you there!
Patience amigo. Patience.
Right on!
Maybe he’s paying for ALL this from his pension from the OCSD? How much does one get if they drop out of the academy 3months in, based on the 3% at 50 calculations? Lol
Remember , Ron Thomas said that “THE AMOUNT OF MONEY SPOKE VOLUMES OF THE CITY’S GUILT ” AND HE FURTHER SAID THAT “IT WAS ALL HE WANTED” … THE AMAZING CURE FOR GRIEF … DURING THE PRESS CONFERENCE I WAS EXPECTING BALLOONS AND CONFETTI BEING DROPPED FROM THE CEILING AND A CELEBRITY PRESENTING A BIG CARDBOARD CHECK WITH HIS NAME ON IT … THAT WOULD OF BEEN AWESOME …
I agree.
Ron is a self-serving empty soul. “The amount of money spoke volumes of the city’s guilt”.
To Ron money-Ron’s best friend-, measures guilt quantitatively: the larger the amount the more conspicuous and heinous the guilt. And who is the subject upon whom the guiltiness recoils? Ron says is “the city”. But the city, the abstract city, happens to be the Fullerton taxpayer,; the residents of Fullerton are recipients of the punishment The body that governs the city has not been substantially punished, as its allowing the same FPD rotten culture proves. Hence, Ron’s obsession on persuading Fullerton residents that the insurance pays for the settlement has remarkable significance as to his character

Good video. It’s on the record
So ron puts the taxpayer bill on Cathys 1 million dollar settlement … the deductible … problem i see they sued separately not as one … taxpayers payed both …
SPUNKY , ARE YOU RON THOMAS’S SPOKES PERSON ? INSTEAD OF COMING TO HIS DEFENSE AND DEFLECTING BULLSHIT ON THE PUBLIC AND TYPING YOUR OPINIONS AND OBSERVATIONS …. IT WOULD BE AMAZING TO HEAR DIRECTLY FROM RON THOMAS HIMSELF … IT SEEMS LIKE HIS HIT SQUAD OF KELLY’S HEROES OR KELLY’S ARMY IS SPEAKING FOR HIM … THAT IS UNFAIR TO ALL WHO WANT TO KNOW … ASK HIM TO SPEAK / TYPE … NOT YOU OR ANYONE ELSE …
