Thanksgiving from the Desert

Friends, greetings from my lonely and dusty compound way, way out on Screech Owl Road – past the meth labs and the Boho Sci Arc schtickers.

Two year’s ago FFFF published a Thanksgiving message from one of our errant bloggers, the original Harpoon. It was just so doggone pithy and pleasant that I  figured it would be better to reproduce it than write my own. So here it is.

Dear Friends, Happy Thanksgiving. Some of you may wonder what an old, crusty, salt-bitten sea gherkin like the Harpoon is thankful for (some of you may not, and may not care).

I am thankful for being part of  a society in which I can hurl my outrageous barbs (i.e. my current working version of the truth) at powers-that-be, and not get locked up;

I am thankful for having a bunch of fertile words and ideas bequeathed to me by people a lot smarter than I am, who happily deigned to bestow their gifts, Bodhisattva-like on the rest of us;

I am thankful for our Friends – a rare few who are able to view the socio-political terrain, and realize that we can do better – a lot better, and who are not terrified by the thought of criticizing the Chimps in Charge.

I am thankful for all the inert Clumps in the dead, sterile center, who peer out to the fertile, incubatorial edges of their paltry weltanshauung and start to sweat yellow fear pellets; for without them we fringers would have no frame of reference ourselves.

And so, from the cold, green-gray waters of the Sea of Japan, I wish one and all of the Friends a Happy Thanksgiving.

  1. “…Thanks for the American dream,
To vulgarize and to falsify until
    the bare lies shine through…”

  2. Happy Thanksgiving to FFFF and all its bloggers who consistently give Fullertonians the truth about our elected officials who serve themselves at our expense, the mediocre slobs who curry favor with these officals and for exposing the follies and foibles of our town’s attempts to redevelop itself into fake, old brick.
Getting off topic, but it is relevant to this site, is the Germanic origin of the double-verb word thanks/giving. combining these two verbs denotes the receiprocal relationship between action and gratitude. So, in this vein of thought, FFFF please keep giving us the truth because those who yearn to hear it are always grateful for this site’s efforts.

  3. Just Brilliant Desert Rat.
I did have to break out my Webster’s Dictionary and figure out the meaning of some of your terminology such as weltanshauung & Bodhisattva (which I already knew is a Steely Dan song), but I get it now.
    HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL!!!

    1. WG, you’ll have to thank the Old Fullerton Harpoon, who wrote that back in 2009 before being lost at sea.

        How? Where? Why?

Forgive the ‘newbie’ ignorance, and rsvp? Thanks.

  4. “Salt-bitten sea gherkin”.

gherkin: immature fruit of a variety of cucumber.
Gherkin also made the list of George Carlin’s cuss words. His version, “jerkin the gherkin”.
    Just fyi..

  5. Thanks to Chris Thompson and Tony Bushala and all of the staffers and bloggers on the FFFF website for leading the charge to get the Fullerton recall initiative on the ballot.
Without the recall going forward, we as Fullerton residents would be stuck with all three of these City Councilman until 2014.
    Thank You All!

  6. I too wish all of you a happy Thanksgiving from the desert. I live in San diego but I’m currently staying in Palm Springs since my mom, bless her 89-year-old heart, tripped on some stairs and fractured her hip. I’m living here and kicking the can down the road until she can finish her rehab therapy and come home.

Don’t get me wrong here; I love you guys and I absolutely support your endeavors 100%, but in a very serious way I wish I never came to know you.

You know what I mean. I know you because of Kelly.

I’m here because of Kelly. FFFF is populated by plenty of non-Fullertonians because of Kelly.

I wish he was having Thanksgiving dinner with his family today — or anywhere; homeless guys and gals have a hard time, we all know this — but he can’t, because the Fullerton police killed him.

I think about Kelly every day, like I think about Matthew Shepard. I have a little memorial for both of these guys on my puja at home, but that certainly isn’t enough. I don’t know what else to do, apart from continuing to talk about it.

FFFF and KFI640 are standing tall, as is OC Weekly.

I really, trully want justice for Kelly Thomas.

He was murdered. Kelly was murdered. I trust the good citizens of Fullerton to bring Kelly’s killers to justice, and we’re all out here rooting for the recall.

I wish every one of you a happy Thanksgiving.

    The happiest of Thanksgivings.

    Blessings on you, every one.

I’m having Thanksgiving dinner with my mom today at her therapy/rehab place.

A month ago, I knew nothing about any of this. Since my mom fell, I’ve learned the importance of advocacy for the elderly.

My sister and I are both out-of-towners, but we’re here for my mom, as long as it takes.

My heart breaks every day for these men and women who appear to be abandoned in their last, maybe most important days. They paddle around in their wheelchairs with nowhere to go. The staff is caring and true-blue, but they can only do so much.

    I’m blathering. Sorry.

Happy Thanksgiving to to all of you. Thank you for your hard work and commitment.

    Justice for Kelly Thomas.

Peace, quiet and healing for Fullerton. You deserve it.

    1. thanks SD for sharin-regards to you and your kin folk and get well wishes to mama-I’ll be celebrating T-Day today with friends of FFFF and will see to it that everyone raise a glass to Kelly and all the others who fell victim to the “Chimps in Charge” and their “mafia mobsters”

    2. Good for you, SDLocal. Mine just turned 90 then had a stroke. She is recovering slowly, but is regaining her ability to speak again. Let’s keep ’em alive as long as we can, eh?

PS: Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving to all the good folk here. Best wishes especially for the folks who make this place possible and keep it alive.

  7. Sorry to hear about your mom SDLocal, however it’s nice to know that she is being cared for by you and your sister.
I sincerely hope that you all have a nice Thanksgiving together.

  8. A very Happy Thanksgiving to you SDLocal and my prayers go out to your mother.
I ditto your sentiments about Kelly Thomas everyday as well.

  9. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Since my Thanksgiving is limited to soup, I decided that I have to give thanks in another way.

I am thankful that I am warm, dry and have a roof over my head.

I am thankful that I live a country where I state my opinions freely.

Thank you Friends for Fullerton’s Future for your tireless efforts.

        1. Jane, my wife makes a wicked soup from the turkey carcass every year. Wish I could share some with you. Hope you find something tasty to eat today none-the-less.

  10. Happy thanksgiving to all out there who have the cerebral capacity to visit the world of the American spirit. The bright light and short leash are what any elected leaders deserve. Our leaders deserve a choke chain here in fullerton. May the absolute requirements of the residents of fullerton become painstakingly evident. Wake up warn others and do not fear. They will not go without fight. The truth will stand on its own and they are no match.

  12. Before I take off on my Thanksgiving adventures for the day I would like to give a BIG THANKS to Tony, Chris, Travis and all you find folks at FFFF. I would also like to thank all of you commenters and your rallying to clean things up for Fullerton.
Prior to the Kelly Thomas incident I knew nothing about the corruption the city leaders and PD have been dishing out.
The murder of Kelly Thomas, whom I didn’t even know, moved me and shook me up like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. You FFFFers(no offense of course) led the charge to justice and I tip my hat to you.

Everyone be safe (drink after your done driving for the day) and enjoy your feast.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING ‘Freinds for Fullerton’s Future!!!

  13. Happy Thanksgiving to all the FFFF family and friends around the world.

I’m thankful to you Tony for providing a space where people who resent authoritarian incompetence can vent their spleen, and for quietly providing, through your actions, a benevolent role model.

I’m thankful to Joe, Chris, and Travis for providing topics to chew on that are relevant and insightful, and frequently humorous. And sometimes infuriating.

I’m thankful to all my fellow 4F posters who characterize the American spirit universally known for being gutsy, persistent, and courageous, and being able to keep a sense of humor throughout.

I’m thankful to Ron Thomas for keeping his dignity under such horrific circumstances, and urging others to take the high road and not resort to the type of behavior I’m certain I would take if I was in his shoes.

And I’m most thankful to Kelly Thomas who was sacrificed because of the vicious disregard for human life that we see being protested in countries half a world away – their problems aren’t so different from our own. God bless you, Kelly.

    1. Happy Thanksgiving, Reality Is. Hope things work out for the best for you and everyone else. Thanks for giving insight into what must be a very trying time as a Fullerton cop.

  14. All well written responses, so I will simply echo them and wish you all a warm Thanksgiving surrounded by family and friends.

  15. I just wrote a lengthy post on gratitude and being thankful on Admin’s entry. I extend that on this thread as well and echo all the thoughts and sentiments above.

May all your hearts be light and filled with kindness and love today and may this Thanksgiving Day bring you memories and more things to be thankful for.
