It’s Kiger knucklehead and keep your eyes on the ball. You really think the voluntary refusal of school board compensation is the answer? How about the fact that half of the Fullerton school board members have been replaced in the past decade and zero bad teachers have been fired.
I wonder how many teachers would remain if we could actually fire all the bad ones.

I say let the kids decide who’s bad. After all, it’s all about the children, don’t laugh I’m serious.
Kids must have the ability to identify which teachers are teaching how to think and not what to think.
You get about $24,000 a year in health benefits alone. But its different for you. Why not rely on the insurance you get from your business? Or doesn Business suck?
Try this on for size. If you took away all of my compensation/benefits for my entire 4 year term and applied it toward successfully terminating ONE under-performing teacher in our district for the first time in over a decade, you’d only need another $150,000 to pull that off. Which problem is bigger? Over-compensated board members or powerful unions? You might want to ask for help on this one.

Which are the bad ones again?
Where I work we have these things called Managers. It’s actually their job to make sure everyone else does their job, promote the ones who do the best work and and improve/remove the ones who do bad. These Managers are highly trained in this regard.

I don’t think you understand. Somehow unionized teachering is the only profession in the world that cannot be managed.
Interesting you should raise the point Blamo. Johnny may be unaware, but in Fullerton we are experimenting with this layer of management we have decided to call “Principals.” Typically they are former teachers who have pursued advanced degrees in teaching and administration and also have proven themselves as top performers themselves. Fortunately the state has allowed us to retain these people as members of management, and as such they are easier to remove if they do not perform. The experiment has gone well. The majority of our Principals in Fullerton are impressive and seem to have a very good handle on the capabilities of their staff. Unfortunately, it is only State and Federal law which prohibits us from ranking teachers and making a management decision to remove the bottom performers as we seek better performers. Funny. Some of my co- board members like to refer to the book Good to Great as though we follow its recommendations. In fact, we cannot. It is illegal for us to pursue a philosophy of constantly seeking the best as we attempt to remove the worst performers.
Give them hell Chris. I work in the schools also and 90% are actually good teachers. Although about 95% think they are entitled and will not give extra effort unless theres compensation involved. Our school system’s need to get back to basics and if the kids need to be retained if they cant cut it.
Chris, your compensation is unethical, just like not being able to fire a bad teacher, you should set an example and live up to your mantra and turn down your insurance and pension. Do the right thing.
How exactly is it unethical?
in my book it is unethical to receive the compensation you do for part time, even sometimes no show work, and then at the same time rip on your employees for the unethical aspects of their compensation. talk the talk and walk the walk, stand up and set an example, but then again you are just another government employee, happily taking tax money while saying till your blue in the face how teachers need to sacrifice (which they should), but that your compensation is just and far, cmon on.
Oh, shut up.
There should be no compensation or benefits for school board members (or city council members). I dont blame folks for taking what is offered but it is every elected board member’s responsibility to vote to kill the package.
