The Cops As Victims; The OC Register as Useful Idiot
Here’s a comical OC Register post from today. I say comical somewhat tongue-in-cheek because almost all Register posts and articles are comical these days.
According to this one, the intrepid journalist Doug Irvine tried to squeeze some information out of the DA – such as the names of the cops who beat on Kelly Thomas’s head like a kettle drum with their taser handles.
The response from our Do-nothing DA? Oooooh! We have so many scary threats these days that we just can’t say anything. Well, there was one, at least!
Of course over at the the beleaguered FPD, spokesbozo Andrew Goodrich supplied his comrades at The Register with a scary bomb threat story (nothing was found, of course). Poor babies.
Jeezus, you wouldn’t think such heavily-armed and highly trained experts would be so easily intimidated, now would you? Apparently they are weak as kittens when the chips are down, even with their McKinley vests, and this justifies the ongoing secrecy. The logic is inescapable, right?
The funny thing is to observe how the Register writer, rather than take the useless DA and FPD to task for their obvious lack of transparency, turns his article into a weepy sob story about the poor, defenseless cops. And of course the fact of the DA spending more time on threats to his office because of his lackluster investigation than on the investigation itself just drips with irony. Could that irony really be lost on Mr. Irving. It would appear so.

The District Attorney’s Office also cited as a threat an entry on the Friends for Fullerton’s Future blog, which has dug into the Kelly Thomas case: “Someone should make these officers contact information and addresses public.”
Blogger Travis Kiger said that wasn’t a threat, and said he hasn’t seen any specific threats on the Friends for Fullerton’s Future blog. He challenged the District Attorney Office’s decision to keep the names secret.
“They release the names of suspected criminals every single day,” he said. “I don’t understand in this case how it would be any different.”
The District Attorney’s Office is “looking into” the one alleged threat that it received, Chief of Staff Susan Kang Schroeder said. Fullerton Police are “taking the threats seriously” but have no active criminal investigations into them, Goodrich said.
“They’ve all been anonymous in nature,” he said. “They would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to track.”
You’ve got to be kidding. Just goes to show you the extent to which the “law enforcement” establishment will go to protect its safety (or pretend to) while blowing off our safety – from them! And when the cops release information about suspects do they give a rat’s ass about their safety? Of course they don’t.
So did the FPD really receive a bomb threat? Who knows? But it’s gotten impossible to believe a single solitary thing that emanates from Andrew Goodrich’s mouth.
Latest dirt I heard today was that kelly thomas put one of the cops not named as one of THE SIX on permenent disability. I laughed so hard, the guy who was telling methis got offended. The truth will come out.

This is not an Anti Cop blog. Just a lot of concerned citizens that want answers, not a cover up. And when good cops (and there are a lot of good cops) start to cover up for the bad ones, it ruins the reputation for the entire dept. And in this particular case, there was a cover up and thats just not acceptable. Furthermore, the PD and City tried to dismiss the concerns of the public and keep everyone in the dark. This blog has been the only thing keeping the Police Dept and City on their toes for once…

Looks like the OC DA and the OC Register is making a veiled threat to “out” posters on the Friends of Fullerton blog.
Posting “Someone should make these officers contact information and addresses public.” is not even remotely close to a threat nor is it even a crime.
The fact that DA investigators wasted valuable time investigating such a mundane post demonstrates that they are not interested in doing a impartial investigation in the “scuffle” and “struggle” (as our friends at the OC Register love to call it) that led to the death of Kelly Thomas, it seems to me they are more interested in wasting resources tracking down activists and posters on a blog.
I have to say that this is no surprise but I never expected them to use the OC Register as an avenue to threaten or scare people away from freely expressing their opinions by threatening to publish their identities in the paper.
By the way, California has a “death penalty” for murder and some people believe that at the very least 2 officers murdered Mr. Thomas.
Writing “Kelly Thomas was murdered by numerous officers and they should get the death penalty.” is not by an means a threat, it is simply an opinion.
Hypothetically speaking If 6 gang members got into a “scuffle” or “struggle” that resulted in that police officer’s death, it would not be far fetched to assume that those gang members would face murder charges with special circumstances (ie the death penalty).

What I find amazing is the excuses the FPD has been using. Any injury the deputies may have or fictitiously gotten only makes them look like fools. Who do they expect to believe that 6 men in bullet proof jackets, armed with weapons and tasers and the collective weight of all of the above 6 men would have sustained any injury from the victim they pounced on? They have attempted to make it sound like a fair fight where they were fighting with Kelly Thomas,but from eye witness accounts,Kelly was not fighting back since he was slammed immediately to the ground and the beating from the first cop began immediately to his head. So they want to act like a bunch of little cry babies now after their great exhibit of machoistic,sadistic brutality? So they want to cry “he hit me..” and hurt my finger as they beat him to a blood mess? They are so stupid it defies words. Who the hell would see six against one and have the least bit of sympathy for these thugs? Cops are the biggest cry babies when they become “victims”. Not that this is relevant, but the FPD were on display at last month’s (7/15) big Food Truck Roundup at Fullerton High School stadium. They had a nice display of weapons that would probably never be needed in Fullerton. This was before the six officers were taken off the street, and many people were clueless about the KT incident. The event is happening again this Friday; I wonder if they’ll be present this time. Highly unlikely.

Police and Sheriffs are not drafted, rather, they CHOOSE their career and line of work. And I’m really tired of hearing about ‘hero’ cops. They chose their profession, and this is what they do every damn day to get paid and put food on the table. So let’s put things back into proper perspective.)
When cops misbehave on the job, violate the public trust and seriously injure or kill citizens, it is society’s DUTY to get to the truth and hold those accountable legally responsible – just like any other citizen would be held accountable.
What we have with this Fullerton police outfit, the city council and their relationship to the OCDA is a conflict of interest, as well as an evasive, self-rightous group of people who are drunk with power. HGH steroid use by Fullerton officers probably figures into the equation as well, and Mr. Thomas’ attorney will be looking into that aspect very closely.
If the Fullerton City videotape of Thomas’ murder is complete and unedited, and an impartial jury views that tape to see the performance of the FPD on July 5th; you’re going to see several cops heading for prison with violent felony records. When all of the eye-witnesses, including the KFI-AM 640 FPD informant, video, hospital Xrays, photos, HGH steroid tests on the officers are all presented in front of a jury, we will probably see justice. Justice in this case, in my view, would be 25 years apiece (no parole) for the six FPD scumbags who assaulted and murdered Mr. Thomas under color of authority. Maybe then we might see some respect for citizens’ personal safety by police and sheriffs. Prison for these six will send a shockwave through the law enforcement industry – and it’s about time. But as several people have said over the last month, if the cops really wanted to get rid of Kelly that bad, why wouldn’t they just grab him, take him to a field in another city, and do him there? I engage you because most of what you say about the abysmal system is true. My goal is to try and change that system, in part by pointing out that the system you support and I and so many others oppose is in fact the current Reality, but can in fact be changed.
As you cockily point out, it won’t be easy to change. The loser union layabouts have spent the money needed to get the system embedded. Now we need to spend money to change that. It can be done. It will be difficult, true. But it can be done.
I don’t doubt you one bit. It took years of good economies and gracious politicians to get public employees where they are today. No one said a word until the economy crashed. Then it was wall street’s fault (no indictments), real estate loan markets fault (very little prosecution), and now it’s the public employees fault. I’m not sure who will be next. We asked for things and they were unanimously approved time and time again because cities had money to spare and wanted good benefits and good pay for their employees. Now they can’t afford what they have given, so they slowly have to take them back. It will be tough to get those back, and very tough to get as deep as you want them to get, but no doubt it could happen. I don’t think it will happen in my lifetime but I could be wrong. I do know one thing, I would never recommend a job in city government or public work for anyone’s child today. Times are changing fast, and when they are 20-30 they won’t be able to support a family at all on the future wages of public employees. It’s reality, not saying it’s bad but it’s reality.

How much clearer could such a conflict of interest be?
Still, clear as it is, it will be really tough to change because of the entrenched interests with big pocket books at stake who are well organized on the other side. Demonstrations are great. They are not the same in 2011 as well funded lobbying.

As a public employee and member of a public employee’s union, I am starting to have serious doubts about my general support for public unions.
I do need them to negotiate for my pay (which is not great at all, contrary to what many of you believe). Of course my union has nothing of the power of the police unions.
The police union along with the prison guard unions seem to have crossed the line from trying to ensure fair pay and working conditions for employees – which is a reasonable goal – to as ExPat says so well, promoting secrecy and lack of accountability.
Here’s a tip for Republicans and conservatives. If you want to get change to this system, stop attacking teachers unions and focus your wrath on police and prison guard unions. Liberals like myself will support change once they are aware of the facts.

ExPat: Someone said he’s not up for reelection for some years. So, what can be done about it? Clearly the conniving sucker feels insulated in his position. If several hundred/thousand(?) people wrote the Attorney General’s or Governor’s office demanding an investigation into corruption in the DA’s office would it accomplish anything? Would writing letters to the California Senators and your Congressmen help? We are agreed that the DA is the lynchpin in this cover-up of a brutal murder by six of the FPD, but you are the legal expert. Are their legal remedies? Can a DA be recalled?
If not, why don’t people actually go through with organizing protests on the DA’s office? Be sure to inform the media if you do. They will ignore the first protest or two, but if you can muster large enough crowds and get it on Youtube the media will probably start covering it a after a few protests. Perhaps a loud enough outcry will get the attention of State government?

Doesn’t it seem like the only actual dirt that comes out of DA offices is when the assistant DA’s run for their office? I saw that in San Bernardino. Other than that, it seems like DA’s are hard to touch. I think as you just wrote Xer, proving it is the hard part. Finding hundreds and thousands of people that actually think the DA’s office is corrupt, and then finding numerous cases that show corruption. I think even if you could find a case or a few cases, then wouldn’t the feds look into those cases and possibly indict the DA for the corruption charges? That whole internal DA process is complex, so I’m sure Ex Pat Law would have an answer for us. I don’t think you could rally general support of many people without hardcore proven facts though.

Look how quickly the DA calls a press conference and puts out information, photos, etc. of the mother accused of throwing her kid over the railing in the parking structure.
Oh, yeah, she’s in jail, too although the investigation is ongoing. No waiting here for “all the facts to be known.”

In the court of public opinion everyone can see the wrongness of what happened to Kelly Thomas. It doesn’t matter who he was,he happened to be Kelly Thomas,mentally ill young man living on the street in your town USA.And your police dept could be almost any other police dept. USA. If Kelly had been a stray dog wandering the street near that bus depot,not harming or threatening anyone,he would have received more humane treatment than a homeless man doing the same thing. Society is sick,mentally ill, desensitized to the worth of a human life.
What happened to Kelly Thomas has been increasingly occuring all over this country. Once there was a little woman who came from wealth and chose to live among homeless and downtrodden on the streets of Calcutta. She saw value in all human life and made a life’s work of helping and caring for them when others cast them to the side. Her name was Agnes Gonhxa Bojaxhui born in Yugoslavia. Her life was legendary and exemplary as she became the advocate of the homeless and sick living on the streets. How many of those were suffering from mental illness along with starvation and physical illness. We may never know. What matters is that ONE little woman made a difference in many lives. Many Kelly Thomases.
But that was India,the filthy,dirty,dusty streets of Calcutta,not the paved landscaped,street lighted pavement streets of California,USA. We are supposed to be better than that here in America.
I have seen it with my own eyes on city streets where humanity lies in helplessness and few even bat an eye..rather, they turn blind eyes away,lest they see the distasteful sight of the streets. Are we that uninformed,that inadequate,that cold to the ocean of humanity crying out for help? The sad truth is yes. Yes, we could get a bowl of water for a dog,or a piece of bread,but nothing but denial is given to a man on the street.
Kelly Thomas’s death has brought awareness now to the harsh reality that there are many Kellys out there. Those of us who are so incensed at the events that led up to his brutal death and the cause of his death are now put on notice ourselves.. We who do nothing will no longer be unaccountable.
A particularly favority story which most people recognize from childhood perhaps has always inspired and served as an example of a how to do the right thing. There was a businessman traveling through an area inhabited by a certain culture other than his own. He came across a man who had been badly beaten and laying in the side of the street. Many,religious,right appearing people crossed the side of the street away from the injured man so as to shun him. The traveling businessman brought him from the street,secured a hotel room,paid for his lodging and care,and pledged to return and pay for any further incurrence on behalf of his care of this stranger. He didn’t have to think twice, he didn’t have to get approved grants,he didn’t have to determine which ordinance was correct or inforceable,no he didn’t do any of that. He simply did the right thing,the thing of good conscience.He was a good man,and he wasn’t even from that culture,he was a Samaritan.
Kelly Thomas was the focus of a rip in the fabric of a designer woven garment. He and every human being living a lesser style of living aside from the color coordinated,designer lifestyle of the rich and famous,credit card maxed out,wanna be’s. He probably didn’t have credit,and he likely survived with a bare minimum of income from a disability check. He likely couldn’t manage that.He was mentally incapable.He had not a groove in which he fit. He was a drifter,a ship without a port,a child in a grown up world.
Without knowing this particular man,we just cannot answer a lot of lingering questions as to his motivation for his response to the confrontation by police. Likely fear of one kind or another was his initial reaction. We all have fears of one kind or another. That doesn’t justify being murdered for our fear.
I remember when police officers were fathers of school mates, brothers of friends,and they were there to keep the peace,offer assistance,answer a question,protect life and property. These men were good, solid citizens themsleves and had integrity and honor. They were interested in truth and justice and their actions supported their belief. They treated others with respect and even the harshest criminals were handled with restraint.
But that was long ago. That breed of a policeman has become on the endangered speicies list. They have been replaced with something that resembles hardened criminals of the worst kind. They have become armed and dangerous and dishonest and lost all respect for the people who are not one of them. They have created unions to protect their crimes and cover their errors and protect their incomes. They are not your friendly officers of yesterday,no, the contrary,they are hard as nails,unsociable,interrogators and accusers of any but themselves.
What happened in Fullerton is happening all over. Power pumped up police shooting first,asking the questions only on trumped up false reports scripted to fit a scenario where the citizen is the aggressor and the poor helpless policeman is the victim..They are pushing the envelopes to invade homes illegally, steal,kill,harass,intimidate,and they have been getting away with it for too long.
If Kelly THomas’death has taught us one thing,it showed us the brutality that was done in plain view of numerous people too frightened to intervene. We have become mice and they have become dirty rats. But talk is cheap,and talking is only going to go so far with action to back it up.Now the ball is in your/our court. What are you/we going to do with it?
Ron Thomas has a tremendous weight on his shoulder. He carries the guilt of a cry he can never answer. He carries the memory of a child he could not help. He carries the wall of obstruction of a system run amuck of which he was once a “brother”. He carries disillusion of a portion of humanity who could stoop so low. He carries also though, a hope,and by his standing,he found many who are standing with him. And for that he is a most grateful man. Is he using every tool available to avenge his son’s murder? Would anyone expect less? Step into his shoes for a day. Let’s not with that on anyone else.
Kelly has left a gift to your community,and it’s an inspiration for all of us to see how you Fullerton people and others are making a stand,drawn a liine in the sand,and it is my hope that your actions will bring great change against this brutality by cops,and that one by one,an army will rise up to pick up the helpless from our streets. God Bless all you brave hearts.
